Passing your theory test
Below you will find information and general advice on passing your driving theory test.
First of all I would like to answer the common questions about the driving theory test.
- You do need a current provisional driving licence to book a theory test, and when you attend your theory test you need to take it with you. If you don't have a driving licence please Contact Us, and we will be happy to post an application form to you.
- You can start your driving lessons before you have passed your theory test. This is a better option because your driving lesson experience, and the advice from your instructor will increase your chances of passing first time.
- You do need to have passed your driving theory test before you can book the practical driving test. If you need help in booking your driving theory test please Contact Us.

About the driving theory test
There are two parts of the driving theory test, the multiple choice question part, and the hazard perception part.
Before the test starts you'll be given instructions on how the test works. You can choose to go through a practice session of the multiple choice questions to get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin. Please try not to worry about understanding what to do, the staff at the test centres are very helpful and will explain everything clearly.
Part one / Multiple choice
The multiple choice question part consists of 50 questions. Associated with each question is a list of potential answers. You need to select the correct answer or answers, by touching the appropriate area of the computer screen.(Please see image below).
You can navigate between questions, and 'flag' questions that you want to come back to later in the test. You will be given 57 minutes to complete the test. The pass mark is 43 out of 50. After the multiple choice part you can choose to have a break of up to three minutes before the hazard perception part starts.

You simply touch the correct answer(s) as shown |
Part two / Hazard perception
After the break you'll then be shown a short tutorial video clip about how the hazard perception part works. The hazard perception part is also delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You'll be presented with a series of 14 video clips, which feature every day road scenes. In each clip there'll be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. To achieve a high score you'll need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five. You won't be able to review your answers to the hazard perception test; as on the road, you'll only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard.
Pass mark for the car Hazard Perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75.
When you have finished the test you may leave the examination room. Once you have left the room, you'll not be allowed to enter it again. Not that you would want to. You will then be given your result by the test centre staff.
If you study and prepare for the test you should be ok, if you need any help, or advice please Contact Us, we will be happy to help.
